How to Avoid the Dreaded Holiday Weight Gain

healthvigil.blogspot.comAs we delve into the heart of the Holidays, the season of giving can easily slip into the season of gaining if you don’t nab your health choices in the butt. There are simple ways to avoid the dreaded weight gain that often comes with the Holiday hustle and bustle. While you are enjoying your family gatherings and holiday work parties, keep these simple tips in mind and avoid having to add to your New Year’s resolutions.

Snack before you party. To avoid over-indulging at a Holiday party, have a quick (healthy) snack before you head out. Entering a party on an empty stomach is dangerous for your waistline. Do yourself a favor and eat prior to party time. This will allow you to enjoy the treats at the party in moderation.

Consider a healthy option. Bringing something to the party? Forego the easy and convenient unhealthy snacks and bring a veggie plate (or some other kind of calorie-conscious dish). Providing a healthier option will give any party more variety and better options for everybody.

Don’t drink your calories. As tasty as that eggnog might be, it’s loaded with calories. While you can’t avoid holiday cocktails completely, just keep in mind how many calories each drink contains and limit your intake. Many of your favorite holiday concoctions pack in more calories than some meals. This is not to say that you can’t enjoy a few libations; just be aware of the calories and drink responsibly.

Skip the seconds. Go ahead, fill your plate! It’s ok to indulge over the holidays. After all, this is the one time a year you get all the traditional family recipe fix in’s. But when you fill your plate, limit yourself to just one trip. Your pants buttons will thank you later.

Taste the sweets. Saving room for dessert? When you hit the sweets, just go for a taste. This will allow you to enjoy the wonderful seasonal treats without going overboard. If you don’t allow yourself these little treats, it could wear down your will-power and wreak havoc on you after.

5 Easy Steps Toward a Healthier Lifestyle

So you want to be healthier…but where do you start? Sadly, living and making healthy choices everyday isn’t as easy as flipping a switch, hoping all the french fries disappear from your life. In a perfect world, we could all wake up tomorrow and have impeccable health and body image. But when reality settles in, you have accept the fact that you actually have work at it and make each decision consciously—and repeatedly—if they are to become natural.

But again, where do you start? Going through the process of becoming healthier will take time, but the reward will last much longer. In order to help you get going on your way to a healthier lifestyle, here are a few easy steps that will make it much easier to get started and much more rewarding to keep going.

ivillage.ca1. Get your head in the game. Being healthy is much more than physical work. As you embark on the journey towards a better lifestyle, it is critical to have the right frame of mind. So get your head in the game—know why you want to do this and what you plan to get out of the work you’re putting into yourself.

2. Set measurable milestones. The best way to develop a healthy lifestyle is to set smaller goals. Take everything in small steps to minimize the pressure you put on yourself. This will make the larger goals more obtainable in the long run.

3. Establish a Routine. Instead of trying to squeeze in meals and workouts between work and sleep, make a routine. Plan your workouts ahead of time and set up weekly meal schedules as a way to create a normalcy in your new healthy lifestyle.

4. Gradually add more. As you start to establish a routine, you can avoid those lulls and drawbacks by adding to your routine. When you set challenges for yourself, it will help to keep your mental state positive and motivate you to never stop.

5. Reward yourself. It won’t help your cause or your state of mind to always push, push, push without celebrating those little victories that you are accomplishing on a daily, weekly, and yearly basis. As you hit your goals, give yourself a little treat for making it that far and celebrate the wonderful changes that are becoming a part of who you are!

Following all these steps will help to make “healthy living” a natural part of your everyday life. What seems like work now will only become a healthier and happier lifestyle tomorrow.

How to Get All the Benefits of Healthy Food

healthyfoodhouse.comWhen it comes to healthy eating, there’s more to know than the difference between a strawberry and a strawberry Starburst. Knowing what is good for you and what isn’t is only half the battle. Did you ever think about how to eat healthy food? Believe it or not, more of us are eating the right foods wrong which, in the long run, only make living a healthy lifestyle that much harder.

In a helpful article on Pop Sugar, there is a list of common healthy foods that we are eating in a “not-so-healthy” way. You can head over there for the full article, but here is a snippet of some foods you might be eating wrong. By learning these tips, you will improve your eating habits and continue on your merry little healthy way.

Sweet potatoes are the greatest things since french fries, but that is the biggest NO-NO when it comes to the nutritional benefits of sweet potatoes. Compared to regular potatoes, sweet potatoes boast high vitamin A, antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties—much preferred to starch and simple carbohydrates. But when fried and dipped in sugary sauces, you are tacking on fat and calories to those otherwise beneficial properties.

Beans often get a bad wrap with high calorie counts and seemingly “high fat” content. But in those calories and fat are great sources of fiber and protein. Where we go wrong with beans is when the sodium and sugary additives get added into canned beans. When adding beans to your diet, look for the lowest sodium possible and add your own flavors.

Apples are packed full of fiber, natural sugars, vitamin A and C, calcium, potassium, folate, and iron—in the skin. Peeling the skin off your apple is depriving you of all of this and more. Next time you feel the craving for this sweet, sweet, snack, try to keep the peel on.

Eating smart and living a healthy lifestyle takes work and knowledge. Knowing what goes into your body is important, from the foods you eat to the nutrients they supply. Everything affects your body in one way or another. To make the most of your diet, keep track of your eating habits and know what your eating (as well as how).

5 Tips to Help Keep You on Fitness Track

secretsoflif3.comWhen it comes to fitness, we all want to be healthy, eat better and live worry-free lives…but we all can’t have that. For many of us, maintaining a healthy lifestyle takes more effort and discipline than we care to admit. The daily monitoring can be tedious and continuous motivation is often hard to come by. But with these 5 simple tips, you can easily stay on track and stay motivated to reach your workout goals.

1. Make a schedule. Hold yourself accountable by creating a schedule (and actually sticking to it). When you have that looming workout in the back of your mind, you are more likely to check it off of your list.

2. Change it up. When you do the same workouts over and over again, the monotony could not only make it more challenging to get motivated, but it could slow down your training and force you into those nasty workout plateaus. Bust out of those by sprinkling in new workouts and challenges that will keep you pushing for more.

3. Set Goals. Whether you set a daily goal or a monthly goal, it’s important to have a goal so you can work toward something. When you have something to work for, you are more likely to work to accomplish it.

4. Eat Smart. As always, a good training routine does nothing without proper eating. Ensuring your body is able to fuel and recover properly is critical to your overall athletic success. Getting the right proportions of protein, carbs, and liquids is simple to do and doesn’t take a lot of effort. You can find many creative and tasty recipes and snack ideas on Pinterest that will get you started on the right path to better eating.

5. Have Fun. One of the most important things to remember with any workout regimen is to have fun! When you enjoy your workouts, it gives you something to look forward to and it will be that motivational factor that gets you up and moving on those more challenging days.

With just a little effort and some planning, you’ll be in better shape in no time. For more tips and tricks on living healthy eating smart, check out our Facebook and Twitter pages!
